Shivneri Fort
Shivaji was born in Shivneri, Kusur, which is a hill fort in Junnar in Pune district on 19 February 1630. Shivaji's mother, Jijabai was the daughter of Lakhuji Jadhavrao of Sindkhed. His father Shahajiraje Bhosalewas, aprominent sardar in Deccan. it is said that mother Jijabai prayed to lord Shiva on Shivneri Fort for a brave son and kept her son name as Shivaji.

At the time of his birth, his father served the Ahmednagar Sultanate,in military and administrative capacities, although they subsequently transferred their allegiance to the Mughal and Bijapur Sultanate. As a servant of Bijapur, Shahaji was deputed in Southern Deccan, He remained in Pune in Northern Deccan with his mother. so he was brought up by his mother Jijabai, He grew up studying Ramayana and also Mahabharata. He showed intense interest in the religious teachings especially tothe Hindu and Sufi Saint. Dadaji Konddev a Brahmin person, was the teacher of bal Shivaji. Dadoji taught him horse riding, Archery, Patta, and also several other fighting techniques.
